6 hidden gems at the second annual FairWell Festival

Published 10:55 am Saturday, July 6, 2024

It’s official: FairWell Festival is no one-hit wonder. The three-day gathering of nationally touring country, folk and Americana music acts launched last year, bringing in big names like Zach Bryan, Willie Nelson and Sheryl Crow, as well as big crowds — upwards of 30,000 people — to the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center in Redmond.

Now, FairWell is back for its second year, with nearly 40 artists scheduled to play three stages inside the fairgrounds. And there are once again major artists headlining: Fast-rising arena-bluegrass picker Billy Strings and top-shelf roots-rock singer-songwriter Jason Isbell on Friday, July 19; likable Americana band Caamp and hit-making singer LeAnn Rimes on Saturday, July 18; and country-pop star Kacey Musgraves and Texas twang-rock band Whiskey Myers on Sunday, July 19.

Chances are, though, you know about those acts and their music. So we’re going to focus instead on some of the other names in the lineup that may not be quite as familiar to many. Here’s six artists playing FairWell Festival you don’t want to miss, two for each day. (And yes: The two choices for Friday are playing at the same time. FairWell is organized such that you can see both with a short walk in between, if you’d like.)

Highlights for Friday, July 19

Katie Pruitt4:15-5:15 p.m., Metolius stage

Katie Pruitt’s stunning 2020 debut album “Expectations” was a beautiful and bracing exploration of her experience growing up queer in the heavily Christian American South. Her followup — “Mantras,” released in April — delivers more of the same, blending folk, country, pop and Pruitt’s soulful, show-stopping voice into an irresistible whole.

Adeem the Artist4:15-5:15 p.m., Crooked stage

“Adeem is a seventh-generation Carolinian,” says the bio on Bandcamp.com, “a makeshift poet, singer-songwriter, storyteller, and blue-collar Artist.” That nicely sums up Adeem the Artist, whose tuneful folk-rock digs into queer life, love, Southern culture, class, prejudice and more in a way that is invariably tender, warm and thoughtful.

Saturday, July 20

Angel White1:15-2:15 p.m., Deschutes stage

Early afternoon sets at fests like FairWell are tough. Attendees are moving slow and saving energy for a long day of music, not to mention getting parked, walking into the venue, etc. On Saturday, though, arrive when doors open to catch Angel White, a Texas singer-songwriter who brings a particularly soulful edge to his openhearted country songs.

S.G. Goodman4:15-5:15 p.m., Metolius stage

There’s so much great music coming out of Kentucky these days. S.G. Goodman is a singer-songwriter from the western end of the state who, on her 2022 album “Teeth Marks,” sings about trauma, queer dating, unrequited love and the opioid crisis and sounds like Neil Young playing in slo-mo on a humid front porch in Appalachia.

Sunday, July 21

Jobi Riccio12:15-1 p.m., Deschutes stage

If you need some prodding to go see Jobi Riccio’s lunchtime set on Sunday, consider this 2023 tweet from fellow FairWell artist and songwriting giant Jason Isbell: “she’s GOOD,” he wrote. “I’m impressed.” Riccio proves him right on her debut album “Whiplash,” an easy-on-the-ears combo of emotionally driven folk, memorable melodies and modern vibes.

Black Belt Eagle Scout1-2 p.m., Metolius stage

Black Belt Eagle Scout is Portland-based musician Katherine Paul, whose 2023 album “The Land, The Water, The Sky” celebrates the power of going home and gaining strength from the people who came before. Paul is a member of the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community, and her brand of indie rock is spacious, lush and deeply resonant.
