- Mapping of the Salt Creek Fire burning east of Eagle Point shows the fire has burned 3,300 acres, according to a Tuesday morning update from fire officials.
Fire officials have mapped the Salt Creek Fire’s footprint at 3,300 acres as a new Oregon Department of Forestry incident management team takes over, bringing hundreds of personnel to the firefight.
On Tuesday afternoon, an update on the fire’s official Facebook page said that, although fire crews are making progress, fire activity has increased as the day’s temperatures rise.
“Hot temperatures into the triple digits and windy conditions are causing minimal growth on small portions of the southwest, southeast and northeastern edges,” the update said. “Firefighters are positions in all of these areas and are engaged in building line in an effort to stop any further spread.”
Some 346 personnel are working the fire burning 10 miles east of Eagle Point, according to a Tuesday morning update issued by Incident Commander Joe Hessel.
Those resources include 21 hand crews, 24 engines, 23 water tenders, 16 dozers and six helicopters. More air resources available on request include large air tankers and single-engine air tankers.
The fire broke shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday, and its cause is under investigation. As of Tuesday, the fire’s estimated cost is $530,000.
Hessel praised the local firefighters’ work to contain the fire Sunday and Monday in triple-digit temperatures. In quotes attributed to him in the morning update, he said their work sets his team up for success.
“Your local initial attack crews gave the team an amazing head start,” Hessel said. “Now, our goal is to finish the job as safely as possible.”
The fire danger level in the forestry department’s southwest district switched over to “extreme” (red) on Tuesday.
The Shelly Fire in the Klamath National Forest in Northern California was listed at 6,261 acres Tuesday and was 0% contained, according to the InciWeb website.
