Editorial: Bike share bikes can’t just be left around wherever

The irksome thing about the city of Bend’s bike share program has been where the Bird Bikes are sometimes left.

Often they are parked perfectly reasonably. Maybe somebody moved them, but we have seen plenty parked not so reasonably — blocking sidewalks or sprawled out in a park.

These pig parkers have been like a leak in a tire, hissing away community support for bike share.

The city may crack down. It wants Bird Bikes to respond to a complaint within 24 hours. The city is also looking into potentially fining riders or the local vendor for Bird Bikes for bikes left in the wrong places, such as blocking a ramp for accessibility.

Tobias Marx, the city’s parking services division manager, told a regional transportation committee earlier this week the city “does not want to be hardcore punishers.” It wants better behavior. He didn’t mention a number for the potential level of the fines.

On the Bird app, there are marked areas where people are told if they park there, Bird will give them a discount toward their next ride. But people don’t always take advantage.

We’d like to see the city’s bike share program succeed. It can help move people around in a lower impact way. But bikes can’t be left in the way.
