Construction crews started knocking down walls at Bend High School last week, a major step in the renovation of the 68-year-old school as part of the $249.7 million school bond measure passed in November 2022.

The $175 million renovation will significantly improve Bend High’s safety and security for staff and students, according to Bend-La Pine Schools officials. Classrooms built in the 1950s will be replaced with new buildings. The school will gain a new entrance, main office, new classrooms, performing arts spaces and athletic areas.

“This project will be the single-largest project of the 2022 bond that was passed, and if I’m not mistaken, this will be the largest project that Bend-La Pine Schools has ever undertaken,” Superintendent Steve Cook previously told The Bulletin. “Hang in there, it’s gonna take time. When that day is over, this will be state-of-the-art facilities that will live for many generations to come.”

Construction will continue during the school year, and is expected to wrap up in August 2028.
