On Saturday, five home gardens will open for tours in the 29th annual High Desert Garden Tour in Powell Butte.

The self-guided tour is open from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and will feature home gardens in Crook County, said Amy Jo Detweiler, professor and extension horticulturist for the Oregon State University Extension Service.

The tour features a sprawling country garden, large vegetable garden, high-end designed garden and more.

“(The) gardens are always evolving, and the main focus for us is that it’s inspirational and educational,” Detweiler said.

Gardens will feature vegetable landscaping, native plants, water-wise gardening, hardscaping, fire-wise landscaping and more.

“(Our goal) is just to inspire people in big ways and small ways,” Detweiler said. “It’s really about educating homeowners. My goal is that they can be successful in their own yards.”

Participants will receive a map and directions to drive to each garden on their own time.

Stationed at the gardens will be OSU Extension Master Gardener volunteers, who provide gardening advice and who can explain the best plant choices, how to conserve water in gardening and how to grow fruits and vegetables.

Attendees should expect to take about four hours to tour all five gardens, said Detweiler.

Tickets are $15 online at the OSU Extension Service website and free for those 18 and under.
