A 19-year-old Redmond man was in critical condition Tuesday after a crash Monday night involving a Jeep Sports Utility and the Kawasaki motorcycle he was riding.

The motorcycle rider was transported to St. Charles Bend around 10:15 p.m. with life-threatening injuries. He was still in critical condition as of Tuesday at noon, said Lt. Eric Beckwith with Redmond police.

“I couldn’t say what kind of injuries, but they are significant. You can see from the picture of the crash (and imagine) what those might be,” Beckwith told The Bulletin.

The driver of the Jeep was a 59-year-old Redmond man. He called 911 following the crash, and he remained on the scene following the incident. He was uninjured.

Beckwith said police are still trying to gain information on the cause of the crash, which occurred near NW Maple Avenue and NW 22nd Street. Oregon State Police were on the scene Monday night and will be conducting a reconstruction of the crash to get a better idea of the speed of both vehicles.

During the summer months, motorcycle riding becomes more popular in Central Oregon, and Beckwith wanted to remind the public to be aware of motorcycles on the roads. He also wished to advise motorcyclists to be aware of their surroundings and take extra precautions.

The 19-year-old motorcyclist involved in the crash was wearing protective gear, Beckwith confirmed.
