Unemployment rates dip in Crook, Deschutes, Jefferson counties

- Employment in Jefferson, Crook and Deschutes counties increased year-over-year, according to monthly Oregon Employment data.
Crook and Deschutes counties added jobs in June and saw drops in their unemployment rates, according to the Oregon Employment Department’s monthly jobs report.
Deschutes County added 420 jobs in June, mostly in the food services and accommodations sector of the economy, according to the report released Tuesday. The added jobs helped send the county’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate to 4% in June, down a smidge from May, according to data provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The unemployment rate in June was just 0.6% above its lowest rate of 3.4% set in March 2020, according to the jobs report. Total nonfarm employment, however, fell 1.1% year over year in June, according to the jobs report.
In Jefferson County, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased slightly in June to 4.6%. From October to December 2019, the county’s unemployment rate was 4.4%, according to the monthly report.
The county saw a decrease of 80 jobs in June, and a 1.6% loss of jobs in the past year.
In Crook County, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped to 6.1% from 6.3% in May. The county added 160 jobs in June, with most of the gains in the public sector, according to the monthly report.
The county lost 70 jobs in the past year. Most of the losses were in the construction, information and other services sectors, according to the report.
