Editorial: Is Oregon asking the right questions for the state’s energy strategy?

Published 5:00 am Friday, July 26, 2024

Next week the state would like to hear from Oregonians on what Oregon’s energy strategy should be.

What happens if Oregon does nothing on energy?

What if consumers are slow to adopt electric vehicles and heat pumps?

What if building up transmission capability holds things up?

What if pipelines can’t be built to deliver cleaner fuels?

Those are all scenarios the Oregon Department of Energy has identified that will be important to test outcomes, so policymakers will be informed and can make better choices.

The plan is to look at the wallet impacts as Oregon makes transitions, as well as changes to employment and the broader state economy.

The effort will have steering groups, advisory groups and working groups to get input from a broad array of perspectives and technical expertise.

Do you think the Department of Energy is looking at the right questions or has the right emphasis?
