In 2019, during a routine flight from Washington, DC, to Salt Lake City, I found myself unexpectedly seated across the aisle from then-former Vice President Joe Biden. This serendipitous encounter left an indelible impression on me, not merely due to his political stature, but because of the genuine human connection we shared during our brief interaction.

Initially, I hesitated to share this experience publicly, apprehensive about how it might be received in our politically polarized community in Central Oregon, where I identify as a moderate Republican. The prevailing divisiveness in our country often discourages open dialogue and understanding between people with differing viewpoints. However, upon reflecting on now-President Biden’s decision to withdraw from the presidential race, I have been encouraged to recount this story. It stands as a testament to the importance of respectful engagement and leadership in today’s society, highlighting someone who has devoted decades to public service.

The encounter began with a small act of kindness: when then-former Vice President Biden dropped his pen, which had fallen into the aisle, I instinctively picked it up and returned it to him. This simple gesture sparked a conversation that touched on profound themes of public service, leadership, and the responsibility we all share to contribute positively to our communities and country.

What struck me most was the former Vice President’s genuine curiosity about me and my perspectives. Despite his decades of experience and notable career, he approached our conversation with humility and a sincere desire to understand different viewpoints. We discussed the challenges of leadership, the necessity of compromise, and the importance of making decisions based on facts and dialogue rather than partisan divides.

Having served as a Bend City Councilor and engaged closely with our community during my mayoral campaign and in my private and professional life, I have always believed in the value of listening to diverse voices and finding common ground. My conversation with then-Vice President Biden reinforced this belief and reminded me of the power of empathy and understanding in leadership.

Throughout my career in public service and now in my professional and volunteer roles, I strive to emulate the principles of collaboration and inclusivity that then-former Vice President Biden exemplified during our encounter. His emphasis on character, compromise, and the greater good has served as a guiding light in navigating difficult decisions and fostering unity.

In today’s increasingly fractured political landscape, it is more important than ever to seek leaders who prioritize unity over division and who are committed to bridging gaps for the betterment of all. This sentiment resonates particularly strongly in election years, when our choices as voters can shape the direction of our communities and our country.

I commend President Biden for his decades of dedicated public service and for his decision to prioritize the greater good by stepping aside from his presidential re-election campaign, allowing others to take the lead. His commitment to empathy, integrity, and genuine concern for others serves as a model for what true public service should embody and reinforces the principles he and I discussed in 2019.

Looking ahead, I firmly believe that fostering respectful dialogue and embracing diverse perspectives are essential for overcoming our differences and working towards a more inclusive society. By prioritizing collaboration and compromise, we can build a future where every voice is valued and where collective efforts lead to meaningful progress for all.

In conclusion, my encounter with then-former Vice President Biden was a poignant reminder of the transformative power of genuine human connection and mutual respect. As we navigate the complexities of modern politics and community engagement, let us hold fast to the importance of empathy, integrity, character, and a commitment to the common good. Together, we can build bridges across divides and create a brighter future for our communities, our states, and our nation.
