Only two hits were needed for the Bend North Little League team to pick up a 6-2 win over Alaska’s Abbott-O-Rabbit Little League in the opening game of the 12U Northwest Regional in San Bernardino, California, Saturday evening.
Both first baseman Cade Craveiro and left fielder Mosi Montgomery came up with two-RBI hits — Craveiro with a two-run double in the first inning and Montgomery with a two-run single in the fourth — to send Bend North to the regional semifinals.
Bend North will take on Idaho’s West Valley Little League Monday at 6 p.m. on ESPN. The winner will advance to the championship game of the modified double-elimination tournament for a chance to qualify for the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Aug. 14-25.
After surrendering two unearned runs in the opening frame, the Bend North pitchers did not surrender a run in the final frames. Chase Johnson got the start and struck out five batters in 3⅔ innings, giving up six hits. In the third inning Alaska loaded the bases with only one out, but the southpaw buckled down and struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning unscathed.
In the fourth inning, Bend North turned a 2-2 tie into a 6-2 ballgame. Catcher Micah Gylling reached on an error, Johnson walked and Craveiro was hit by a pitch. Bend North then scored on a passed ball and a wild pitch to take a 4-2 lead. Montgomery’s two-run single gave Bend North a four-run cushion.
Jensen Flagel stuck out two batters in 1⅓ innings on the mound, and Gylling came in to close the door with a scoreless sixth inning.
The winner of Monday night’s semifinal game between Bend North and Idaho will play in Thursday’s regional championship game. The loser will play in an elimination game on Wednesday at noon.
