Sandy Weston
July 2nd 1942 – July 8th 2024
Our family sadly lost a centerpiece this month when Sandy Weston passed away on July 8, 2024. Known to her grandchildren as Yaya, Sandy was born Sandra Lee Greening on July 2, 1942 in Brooklyn, New York. Her father Hank was in the Navy and along with her mother Kay and brothers Mike and Steve she moved around a bit early in life, with stops in Hawaii and Japan, before eventually settling in Bend, Oregon as a young child.
After graduating high school she first attended the University of Oregon and then went to live in San Francisco, where she met the love of her life Ken Weston. They married and settled in Bend where they had two beautiful daughters, Nicole and Bianca. Sandy wore many hats throughout her life. She was a mother extraordinaire who would throw an extravagant wedding for stuffed animals and the fanciest birthday parties you’ve ever seen. She was passionate about architecture and built and designed the homes she lived in as well as Spa W, which she founded, owned, and operated. She was active in the PTA and local charities, and she helped her husband Ken run an assortment of other businesses, including the Westside Tavern.
Sandy’s passion for travel and adventure took her to amazing places in her life- Vietnam shortly after it reopened to tourism, the far-flung camel markets of India, safaris in Africa and so much more. And that passion was shared- and passed on- to her children and grandchildren. Most recently, midway through an epic trip to Thailand and Cambodia, she stayed out dancing until the band quit, alongside her husband, children, and grandchildren at a New Year’s Eve party in Bangkok- a true “last hurrah,” as she would say. She lived in Mismaloya, Mexico for a decade. She would host Nicole’s family and Bianca’s family, and so her grandchildren Hank, Sophia, Theo, Hadley, and Nash spent many Christmases and Spring Breaks there. She walked the beach, sat at Ophelia’s for lunch and conversation with Ken, and usually opened one Corona when she started to cook the evening’s dinner. She was a fantastic chef. Around Bend you may have seen her on her daily 5-mile walk. She will be truly missed. She is survived by her husband Ken, daughters Nicole and Bianca, grandchildren Hank, Sophia, Theo, Hadley and Nash, and her brother Steve.
A gathering is planned for Wednesday, August 7- if you knew Sandy and would like to attend, please email justinbianca@yahoo.com.
