- A helicopter drops water on the Elk Lane Fire west of Madras on Monday.
The Elk Lane Fire burning 7 miles northwest of Madras grew to 5,093 acres and was zero percent contained as of Tuesday, fire officials said.
The fire started at 7:30 p.m. Sunday as a result of a lightning strike. It grew quickly, and hot, dry and windy conditions have created challenges for firefighters as they work to contain the blaze.
The fire remains on the east side of the Deschutes River, with the most significant growth over the past two days east of Elk Drive and west of Dry Canyon. Structures in the area remain threatened and evacuation notices are still in place. Madras High School is a temporary evacuation site, and evacuated animals can be taken to the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.
There are 222 personnel working on the fire, including three hand crews, 41 engines, two bulldozers and nine water tenders. After Gov. Tina Kotek invoked the Emergency Conflagration Act on Monday, resources from the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s office became available.
