- New Bend metal band Batwave will celebrate the release of its new "Reptilianz" EP Thursday at Volcanic Theatre Pub.
You may know Tom McCall as one of the lead songwriters in the popular local rock band CPTN OVER. But did you know he also occasionally listens to a ton of Black Sabbath and then tries to capture the sound and spirit of classic heavy metal in song?
That’s more or less the origin story of Batwave, a new band out of Bend that started when McCall wrote a song called “Reptilianz” and then showed it (and a couple of other ideas) to his friend Julian Verbrugghe, who has played with local bands Night Channels and Rubbah Tree. They knew they had something worth pursuing, so they recruited local recording guru (and founding member of Mad Caddies) Todd Rosenberg to help them bring the songs to life.
“We didn’t want to hesitate recording the songs on this EP, with the intention of keeping them as fresh out the oven as they could possibly be,” McCall said.
He’s talking about Batwave’s new “Reptilianz” EP, which features McCall (guitar/vocals), Verbrugghe (bass) and Rosenberg (drums) playing five songs of riff-tastic heavy rock ‘n’ roll that should appeal to fans of bands like Queens of the Stone Age, Red Fang, Wolfmother, Fu Manchu or, yes, Black Sabbath. We’re talking grimy guitar tones, earth-moving grooves and the sort of sinister swagger you get from stoner metal, doom, psychedelic garage-rock and beyond.
Batwave EP release show, with -ether, Gaspack and Weapon World: 8 p.m. Thursday, doors open 7 p.m., $10 in advance, $20 at the door, Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Drive, Bend, volcanictheatre.com.
