A Bend man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder Sunday morning after he called 911 and told dispatchers he hit his roommate in the head with a bat, police said.

Timothy John Boyd, 66, was lodged in the Deschutes County jail and faces charges of attempted murder, first-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon in what was described as a “severe beating,” according to a news release from Bend Police Department.

Police responded to the 911 call at 5:03 a.m. in the 19000 block of Arrow Wood Drive in southwest Bend. There they found Boyd’s 58-year-old roommate, identified in court documents as Stephen Jay Steria, with severe head injuries. Steria was transported to St. Charles Bend, where he was in the intensive care unit Sunday.

Boyd made an initial court appearance Monday. His arraignment on indictment is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 26.
