Thantifaxath highlights a brutal metal bill Saturday in Bend

- Thantifaxath hails from Canada and makes wildly ambitious avant garde black metal for fans of sharp corners, anxiety and whiplash.
The biggest band on Saturday night’s metal bill at Volcanic Theatre Pub is the brutal blackened thrash band Goatwhore from New Orleans. Next biggest is Vitriol, a death metal band from Portland.
I’d like to use this space, however, to talk about not the biggest band on the bill, but my favorite: Thantifaxath, a mysterious Canadian trio that made one of the best albums of 2014. It’s called “Sacred White Noise,” and it’s towering and terrifying in its sound and scope, blowing apart the established boundaries of black metal and putting them back together in a way that is both dissonant and disorienting. Their 2023 follow-up, “Hive Mind Narcosis,” delivers more of the same.
That all sounds bad, probably, but it’s actually awesome. Thantifaxath makes wildly ambitious avant garde black metal for fans of sharp corners, anxiety and whiplash. Don’t miss ’em!
Thantifaxath, with Goatwhore, Vitriol and Gravewitch: 9 p.m. Saturday, doors open 8 p.m., $20, Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Drive, Bend, volcanictheatre.com.
