Shriners Children’s of Portland has opened a clinic in leased space at The Center Orthopedic & Neurosurgical Care in Redmond.

The charitable health organization had wanted to have a presence in Central Oregon for a number of years, said Deserae Dorton, Shriners spokeswoman. The new location, which opened in April, is on NW Larch Avenue in Redmond.

For years Shriners, which cares for children younger than 18 regardless of ability to pay, the patients and their families had to make the trek to Portland for care. Since opening, physicians have seen about 150 children during twice per month visits for pre- and post-operative appointments and for putting on casts, Dorton said.

“Central Oregon has always been an area of unmet need in pediatric orthopedics particularly, complex pediatric orthopedic needs,” Dorton said. “Shriners Children’s is committed to providing care to more kids in more places.”

Physicians are available the second and fourth Friday of every month in Redmond, according to the Shriners website.

In 2021 Shriners opened a clinic in Medford, Dorton said. Redmond is the organization’s second stand-alone clinic, she said.

St. Charles in talks to employ The Center doctors, staff

The Shriners operations should not be affected by St. Charles Health System possibly hiring the medical staff of The Center Orthopedic & Neurosurgical Care & Research, the region’s largest, private orthopedic clinic, said Jenny King, The Center spokeswoman. Services should remain the same, King said.

“This collaboration enables us to expand access and enhance the quality and range of pediatric orthopedic services available,” King said. “We’re proud to bring this specialized care closer to home for many families.”

Shriners Children’s has treated 1.5 million children from more than 170 countries over the past 100 years. Previously, the organization was known as Shriners Hospitals for Children, but changed its name to reflect changes in care that encompasses a range of orthopedic issues.
