The commercial season for harvesting matsutake mushrooms in the Deschutes National Forest opens next week.
Each season, matsutake mushrooms emerge in early September in the higher elevation forests of hemlock, fir and ponderosa pine, according to the Deschutes National Forest.
A commercial harvest permit is required for anyone planning to collect and sell the mushrooms. The commercial season runs from Sept. 3 to Nov. 4.
Harvesters are required to have a map detailing the allowed areas to gather, transport or sell mushrooms. Tools for harvesting cannot exceed 1 inch wide and 18 inches long and harvesters cannot rake or disturb ground to harvest.
Deschutes National Forest will only accept cash on Sept. 3, due to an influx of permit purchases. After Sept. 3, harvesters can use a credit card for purchases.
Permits are available for those 18 years or older and cost $200 for the season, $100 for a half-season and $8 per day with a three-day, nonconsecutive minimum.
Commercial mushroom harvesting is not allowed in the Davis Late Successional Reserve, Newberry National Volcanic Monument, wilderness areas, developed recreation areas and other nonharvest areas on the map.
