- Deputy Kevin Riding of the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office, right, helps Jacob Lecense exit his vehicle after a crash into a pond in Terrebonne on Monday.
After police received a series of complaints of a motorist driving recklessly on U.S. Highway 97 on Monday, a driver rolled his vehicle over, landing in a pond in Terrebonne.
Around 3:45 p.m., the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office received reports of a silver SUV swerving between lanes and nearly striking other vehicles heading north on Highway 97, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
The driver was unable to keep the vehicle in one lane, swaying across white and yellow lines, according to Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Jason Wall.
A deputy located the car, but due to heavy congestion, lost sight of the vehicle while attempting to make a traffic stop.
Deputies were then dispatched to a crash near Smith Rock, and upon arrival they realized the crash involved the vehicle they were searching for, Wall said .
The driver, who was allegedly intoxicated, was not able to exit of the vehicle. The car was not completely submerged and deputies helped him to safety.
The driver, Jacob Lecense, 34, of Bend, was transported to St. Charles Redmond for evaluation, though he appeared uninjured.
”We believe, based on the investigation, that the speed was excessive and the level of intoxication was also a factor,” Wall said. “Just wasn’t able to negotiate the roadway and ended up in a pond. And thank goodness no one was in the pond… . Everyone got lucky, including the driver.”
Afterward, Lecense was taken to the Deschutes County jail on suspicion of driving under the influence of intoxicants, reckless driving and second-degree criminal mischief.
