A Bend man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after gunshots were fired near the Lighthouse Navigation Center on Wednesday afternoon.
Authorities report that Aaron Brandon Polit, 44, parked his car on NE Emerson Avenue around 3:30 p.m. before he exited the vehicle and called out to another man nearby. Witnesses saw Polit level a handgun at the man before firing at least one shot, according to a news release from Bend Police Department. The man was not injured and took shelter inside the Lighthouse Navigation Center, a homeless shelter and service provider.

After the victim fled, a bystander with a valid concealed weapons permit drew his gun and confronted Polit. Polit dropped his gun and after police arrived, was taken to the Deschutes County jail without incident. Bend Police did not identify the victim or the bystander.
In addition to the 9 mm handgun dropped by Polit, authorities found a 12-gauge shotgun and body armor in his 1988 Black Jeep.
Because Polit is a felon — court documents show a criminal history dating back to 1998 — he was also charged with being a felon in possession of a weapon and body armor in addition to attempted murder, unlawful use of a weapon and reckless endangerment.
The area around the incident remained closed for police investigation until 10:30 p.m.
