“Transportation has local, regional, and even national importance,” Rep. Susan McClain, D-Hillsboro, a co-chair of the Joint Committee on Transportation, said in a news release. “I’m grateful that each stop we’ve made provides an opportunity to hear from community leaders and from the public, both about their communities’ transportation needs, and, importantly, what funding solutions they would support to meet those needs.”
Without legislative action, Oregon Department of Transportation officials have warned of major cutbacks to staffing and services like plowing snow, patching pavement and removing litter and graffiti. The agency faces a $354 million gap between expected funds available and costs to maintain current levels of service, according to a recent report.
The report forecast cutting 1,000 employees across the agency, including 116 in Region 4, which encompasses Central Oregon.
Declining gas tax revenue, rising material costs and restrictions on use of funds have strapped the transportation agency.
While in Bend, lawmakers on the 12-member transportation committee, local government and ODOT officials will embark on a 90-minute bus tour to view the biggest needs in the area, followed by a roundtable discussion.
