- The Environmental Center is hosting a happy hour in the garden event on Tuesday.
It’s been a long week of restricted outdoor activities due to smoke from local wildfires. Here are a few things to do outdoors when the smoke clears. Take a tour of the Deschutes Land Trust’s Ochoco Preserve, go for a bird walk, or ride to five different breweries in Bend’s northeast district.
Ochoco Preserve Tour
The Deschutes Land Trust is running a tour of its Ochoco Preserve that will be hosted by Leslie Olson. Olson has lived in Bend for 30 years and been a tour leader with the land trust since 2010. The tour will consist of an easy one- to two-mile hike on either paved and gravel trails or old roads and through grassy fields. Attendees will learn about the land trust’s restoration project for the area that began in 2022 and moved into its second phase in 2024. Olson has lived in Bend for 30 years and been a tour leader with the land trust since 2010.
Thursday 1-3 p.m.; free; Ochoco Preserve, Near Ochoco Creek, Prineville; deschuteslandtrust.org.
Outside In Bird Walk
Damian Fagan, a Bend resident and former National Park Service ranger, will lead this bird walk for beginner and experienced birders. Outside In will provide snacks and coffee following the walk, which will begin from its storefront in downtown Bend.
Thursday 9 a.m.-noon; register online; Outside In, 845 NW Wall St., Bend; facebook.com/events/1028274502493626 or 541-317-3569.
Radlerfest
Pedal around Bend’s northeast brewers district to try five different $6 radlers. A “radler” is 50% beer and 50% soft drink. A German pub created the cocktail for “radlers,” which is German for cyclists.
Five breweries, Bridge 99 Brewery, Craft Kitchen & Brewery, Oblivion Brewing, Van Henion Brewery and 10 Barrel Brewing Eastside, will be taking part, tapping $6 radlers for bike riders along a two-mile loop. Start at any one of the locations, and ride around the neighborhood. The event is free to attend (no tokens or tickets; all radlers sold a la carte).
Saturday 1-7 p.m.; free; Bridge 99 Brewery, 63063 Layton Ave., Bend; facebook.com/events/1698508170927912.
Happy Hour in the Garden
Join The Environmental Center and other volunteers at the Kansas Avenue Learning Garden for a drink, to socialize and work in the garden. The event is open to all ages and gardening abilities. Beer and non-alcoholic beverages are provided for all who volunteer. Volunteers are welcome to pop in for an hour or stay the whole time. No need to RSVP or commit ahead of time. No experience or tools required.
According to the center’s website, volunteers contributed over 200 hours to maintaining the learning garden over the growing season in 2022. Happy hours in the garden run twice a month in 2024 on the first and third Tuesdays from March through October.
