When you’re vegan, eating in restaurants can be too thick a topic to swallow. But above all, there’s no meal more difficult than breakfast.
Breakfast menus normally feature the classic slate of eggs, bacon and pancakes. For a plant-based diet, I’ve often resorted to eating hash browns or potatoes at restaurants.
It leaves me feeling hungrier than when I arrived, and watching others eat thick stacks of pancakes with melted butter turns my stomach into a cavernous pit of despair.
During my summer here as a Bulletin intern, I’ve been nibbling away at as many restaurants as possible. I’ve also tasked myself with finding accessible breakfast options for both plant-based eaters.
Here’s a list of the best places to eat breakfast in Bend if you’re vegan.

A vegan delight, CHOW has a special gluten-free and vegan menu with multiple breakfast options. On the menu are vegan pancakes, tofu scramble, French toast and a portobello mushroom dish. For added protein, CHOW serves a side of veggie sausage.
