Crater Lake National Park north entrance reopens after fire danger subsides

The north entrance at Crater Lake is open again following several weeks of closure due to wildfires in the area. The gate is expected to stay open until its regular winter closure on Nov. 1.

The gate was closed in mid-August as wildland firefighters worked in the area to create control lines around the Middle Fork Fire, burning on the northwest corner of Crater Lake National Park. The fire had burned 5,286 acres and was 70% contained, as of Monday.

The north entrance was closed for around one month, with only one temporary opening during the Labor Day weekend.

Several trails within the park remain closed due to the Middle Fork Fire, including Bald Crater Loop Trail, Bert Creek Trail and Boundary Springs Trail. The Pacific Crest Trail, where it runs through Crater Lake National Park, is fully open.

Cooler temperatures have also allowed park staff to rescind a fire ban in the area. Fires are permitted at the Mazama Campground in grills or grates at designated campsites. Park officials also advise that gasoline is not available in the park. Due to a repair project the gas pumps at Mazama Village are closed for the season.

Visitors to the park should continue to monitor road conditions. An early snowfall could shut the north entrance road prior to the planned Nov. 1 closure.
