- A garbage truck dumps trash into a newly opened section of Knott Landfill on Friday in Bend. Tim Brownell, director of the Deschutes County Department of Solid Waste, estimated that part of the landfill would be full in approximately three years.
Have too much stuff or want to hunt for the odd treasure?
The Deschutes County Solid Waste Department is hosting an event titled “Drop It, Swap It,” allowing area residents to donate unwanted items and take home items others don’t want any more. The event is free and residents do not need to drop off items to participate in the swap.
The swap meet is scheduled to start at noon and run until 2 p.m. on Sept. 28. Items can be dropped off at the Deschutes County Road Department main office, 61150 SE 27th St. in Bend, between 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. The office is located next to the Humane Society of Central Oregon. Drop-offs are also permitted during the swap hours, but the organizers prefer items arrive earlier in the day.
The goal of the event is to reduce waste going into the county landfill. Residents are invited to drop off items that are clean and in good working order.
Accepted items include housewares, electronics, instruments, tools, books, toys and games. Items that are not accepted include clothing or footwear, personal care products, large kitchen appliances, large furniture or items that are broken or have missing pieces.
