Summit cross-country’s boys and girls win big at Northwest Classic

Summit cross-country claimed boys and girls individual and team titles at the Northwest Classic Saturday at Eugene’s Lane Community College.
The Storm’s Sophia Capozzi won the girls 5A/6A race in 18 minutes, 1 second. Caldera’s Maddie Carney finished second in 18:22, and La Salle’s Maya Crimin placed third in 18:38.
Summit won the team title with 36 points, just edging crosstown rival Caldera, which finished second with 42 points. South Eugene was third (115), Bend High took sixth (179) and Mountain View finished 10th (244).
Summit had three other girls place in the top 10, including Skye Knox (sixth, 18:49), Eva Dicharry (seventh, 19:06) and Dailey Arnold (10th, 19:30).
Caldera had two other girls in the top 10, including Miley Morical (fifth, 18:45) and Mia Koernig (eighth, 19:17).
In the boys 5A/6A race, Summit’s Hayden Boaz won in 14:58, Sheldon’s Malachi Schoenherr was second in 15:07, and Caldera’s Mason Morical took third in 15:16.
The Storm boys easily won the team title with 50 points, followed by West Linn (100) and Sheldon (105). Caldera finished sixth (182), Bend was ninth (238), Mountain View 11th (266) and Ridgeview 13th (328).
Two additional Summit runners finished in the top 10, including Ben Meier (sixth, 16:07) and Bjorn Blankenship (eighth, 16:17). Bend’s Finley Lyke placed 10th in 16:18.
Summit, Caldera, Bend, Mountain View, Redmond and Ridgeview are set to race at Nike Portland XC at Blue Lake Regional Park this Saturday. It is one of the biggest high school cross-country meets in the country, with more than 100 teams from eight different states.
