Tours, summits and other learning opportunities this week in Central Oregon

- The Deschutes Historical Museum will run haunt walk tours on Friday and Saturday. This will be the museum's final season hosting the tours, which began in 2010.
Community members and tourists can attend a wide range of talks, tours and workshops this week, some of which are listed below.
Learn writing skills, try hemp beverages, take a scary tour of Bend, discuss the city’s housing crisis and explore 3D scanning.
I Am Fall — A Writing Workshop for All Ages
Matthew J. Friday, British-born writer, professional storyteller and public school teacher, will lead a family writing workshop. Friday, who has a Master of Arts in creative writing from Goldsmith College-University of London, will guide writers of all ages to generate ideas about fall using the senses. He will then show attendees how to use the skill of personification.
The workshop is suitable for writers of all ages, from absolute beginners to practicing poets. Matthew has taught K-8 students, and currently teaches third grade.

Pacific Hemp Beverage Summit
This is an educational and networking conference for supporters of the hemp beverage industry. Attendees will include local and national distributors, suppliers and manufacturers, legislators and lawmakers and retail buyers. Enthusiasts and those in the general public are welcome to attend as well.

2024 Historical Haunts of Downtown Bend walking tour
The Deschutes Historical Museum has been hosting its haunted tours of since 2010, and this will be the final season. Over the years, the museum has shared the history and paranormal stories of more than 15 locations, businesses and sites to over 6,000 locals and visitors.
Attendees are welcome to wander the halls of the museum to find this year’s Creepiest Doll contestants and stop in the research room to view footage of the “Brosterhous Ghost,” while waiting for their tour to begin. Admission to the museum is included with tour purchase.

Building a Better Bend Lecture — Coming Together for Housing
The presentation looks at how the community can use information learned about the local housing crisis and come together for solutions. Speakers include Clark Anderson, co-founder and executive director of Community Builders, and Katy Brooks, CEO of Bend Chamber of Commerce.
The discussion will identify the cultural issues and how public fear can limit the community’s ability to make meaningful change, as well as actions individuals can take to turn the crisis around.

Science Pub — 3D Scanning for Heritage Preservation
Todd Kesterson, an award-winning Oregon State University expert in 3D modeling, 3D animation and virtual reality applications, will explore how 3D scanning can digitally preserve global and local heritage sites. Historic sites around the world are at risk from natural disaster, war and vandalism. Kesterson will show how 3D scanning tools can digitally preserve heritage sites throughout the world, including in Oregon.
