Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups will be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on Sunday in Springfield, Massachusetts.

To prepare, the former five-time NBA All-Star had to write an acceptance speech. However, he might have become a little overzealous and wordy. He was told to keep the speech to about seven minutes but jotted down about 14 minutes worth of material.

“The problem is, I’m way over time,” Billups said following a recent practice. “I got to trim it down. But I just don’t know where. I’m about twice the amount that it should be … I got a lot to say.”

As he should. Billups, who played for seven different franchises in 17 seasons (1997-2014), struggled during the first five years of his career before coming into his own in Minnesota during the 2001-2002 season. He soon landed in Detroit, where during the 2003-2004 season, Billups led the Pistons to an NBA championship and was named Finals MVP.

Presenting Billups will be former Detroit coach Larry Brown, former Pistons teammate Ben Wallace, and former WNBA star Tina Thompson.

All three are in the Hall of Fame.

Brown coached Billups during the best stretch of his career.

“No coach got more out of me than him,” Billups said of Brown. “He means so much to me. Not only in my playing career but even now. He’s still leading me, teaching me, giving me ideas. Giving me encouragement all the time. He’s just somebody that means a lot to me.”

Wallace was a defensive force for the Pistons.

“Ben, obviously him or I wouldn’t be there without each other,” Billups said. “The run we had in Detroit was a big deal. And I was there watching him go in two years ago, and obviously, that’s my brother.”

Thompson, a nine-time All-Star and four-time WNBA champion, is a scout with the Blazers.

“Tina and I have just been very, very dear friends for a long time,” Billups said. “I got so much respect for her, who she is. I got so much respect for the women’s game that I just thought it was an opportunity to shed some light on our relationship, our friendship, and who she has been to me.”

Billups said he likely wouldn’t become emotional during the induction ceremony but wasn’t quite sure.

“Probably not,” he said. “But I don’t know. We’ll see. I’m not the most emotional dude in the world, but this is an emotional event.”

Blazers lead assistant Nate Bjorkgren, hired during the offseason, will coach the team’s second preseason game Sunday at the Sacramento Kings.

The Blazers opened the preseason Friday night against the LA Clippers at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle.
