Silver Moon Brewing hosts Katy Guillen & The Drive

- Last year, Katy Guillen & The Drive released a Spanish-language version of one of their most popular songs.
Here are three things I love about Katy Guillen & The Drive, who I’d never heard of before they were booked to play at Silver Moon Brewing on Friday night:
1. Guillen’s guitar tone, which is robust and resonant, like electric guitars are supposed to sound. I’m not enough of a gearhead to know what exactly she’s using to get that tone, but I do know that her playing sounds crisp and bright when it should be crisp and bright, and distorted and dusky when it should be distorted and dusky. This is a great guitar band!
2. The songs on the band’s 2022 album, “Another One Gained,” which are catchy and compelling but don’t feel overwrought or fussed over. Urgent but unhurried, they settle into a space somewhere between fuzzy indie rock, rugged alt-country and, thanks to Guillen’s sturdy voice, an old torch song. They’re kind of like Band of Horses without the helium-high vocals.
3. Last year, Guillen released a single called “Batallas,” a remixed Spanish-language version of their song “Battles” from 2021. The reworking came about because she wanted to explore ways of representing her Mexican-American heritage. The band also added cajon, claves, palmas and timpani to the track, and guest player Mireya Ramos contributed a fiery new violin solo. Very cool!
Check out their music at kgandthedrive.bandcamp.com and then go see ‘em at Silver Moon. They’re a long way from their hometown of Kansas City, Missouri.
