Central Oregon trail conditions: Last chance for fall colors on Fall River; Horse Ridge trails great option come winter

Published 3:30 pm Thursday, October 24, 2024

We’ve finally got some nice, crisp fall air this week. It feels like winter is on the horizon.

Whether you were waiting for it or dreading it, at least the mountains look pretty again. Don’t worry; there’s a break in the chilly weather this Saturday, with temperatures expected to reach the mid-60s. Then, the forecast predicts rain and highs in the low 50s for Sunday before a week of temperatures peaking in the high 40s.

A little more precipitation has continued to improve local trails this week. Some local reports have mentioned snow and puddles in the Wanoga trail complex. But other areas are still pretty sandy and dusty as well. Expect more precipitation over the next couple of weeks to drastically change the trail conditions.

Below are some recommended spots for recreation this weekend. For mountain bike and other trail-specific updates, check out bendtrails.org and the BendTrails Facebook group.

Horse Ridge trails great option come winter

Since we woke up to our first bit of morning frost in town this week, here’s a good option for the winter months to come.

The Horse Ridge trail system offers intermediate- and expert-level trails great for mountain bikers during winter and the wetter times of year. Out in the High Desert east of town, the trails soak up and drain moisture better than their western counterparts in the Phil’s system. The area’s terrain and foliage also look much different than Phil’s. It’s a rocky juniper forest with open landscape views of the Cascade Mountains to the west and surrounding High Desert to the east.

In total, the area has about 30 miles of trails and 1,300 feet of climbing possible, topping out at 4,700 feet elevation. Five trails are black diamonds — experts only — while one is for beginners and the rest intermediates. Hikers are welcome on the trails and so are dogs, but they must be on a leash.

The trails are about a 20-minute drive east on Highway 20 from downtown Bend.

Crane Prairie continues to fish well, closes end of month

There’s snow on the mountains, and it’s the last weekend of the year to enjoy fishing at Crane Prairie Reservoir. According to reports on the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) website, anglers have found good trout fishing in Crane Prairie Reservoir with the Cultus and Deschutes River arms producing fish. Reports say the bass fishing as been good as well.

Rainbow trout here average 2 inches of growth a month during the summer, according to the U.S. Forest Service website. The record rainbow to date weighed over 19 pounds, with abundant rainbows in the 4-to-10-pound range. The reservoir is also a wildlife management area. Osprey, bald eagle and many waterfowl frequent the area.

The reservoir is currently 70% full. Crane Prairie closes to angling on Oct. 31. It typically reopens in April.

Check out the Department of Fish and Wildlife’s website for more fishing reports.

Last chance for fall colors on Fall River

If you’re looking for a last look at Central Oregon’s fall colors, a hike along the Fall River would make for beautiful day out. The area has a flat, 6-mile out-and-back hike along the Fall River Trail as well as the 5-mile Fall River loop. Both offer nice views of the winding river, with the loop also providing glances of the Deschutes River. The trees in the area will be losing their leaves shortly, if not already. Now is the time to get one last glimpse and possibly encounter a morning dusting of snow.

The Fall River also has great year-round fishing above its falls and was recently stocked with trophy trout.

The Fall River Trailhead is about a 30-minute drive south from Bend and accessible from County Road 42 via South Century Drive. The loop can be done from multiple areas, but hikers are best off starting from La Pine State Park.
