If you were to carve out four faces for a Mt. Rushmore of bluegrass music, Tony Rice might make the cut. He was a world-class guitar player who excelled at playing in the genre’s traditional style, but also spent much of his career pushing and pulling on the form and became one of the major figures in the rise of progressive bluegrass.
And when it came time for Rice to staff his own namesake band, The Tony Rice Unit, he chose John Reischman to play the mandolin. Reischman began his career in California’s Bay Area before moving to Vancouver, B.C., where he formed the Jaybirds, who he’ll bring to The Belfry in Sisters this weekend.
To be certain, Reischman is a dazzling mandolinist from a technical perspective, but he is often praised just as (or more) effusively for his deft touch and his tone, which is remarkably clear and uncluttered while at the same time easygoing, ultra-melodic and completely approachable. Few people in history have made the mandolin sound as effortlessly gorgeous as Reischman.
John Reischman and the Jaybirds, with Danger Gently: 7 p.m. Friday, $29, The Belfry, 302 E. Main Ave., Sisters, belfryevents.com.
