Eight Central Oregon volleyball teams are one step away from advancing to their respective classification’s eight-team state tournament.
Bend High, Caldera, Summit, Mountain View, Crook County, Sisters, Trinity Lutheran and Central Christian will all be in action Saturday hoping to extend their seasons by at least two matches with a playoff victory.
Four teams from the Intermountain Conference reached the postseason and will try to advance to the Class 5A state tournament at Forest Grove High School, Nov. 8-9.
No. 4 Bend High, the IMC champion, is seeking its fourth-straight state tournament appearance when the Lava Bears take on No. 13 West Albany in a rematch of last year’s quarterfinal matchup, which the Lava Bears won in straight sets. The match is set for 1 p.m. at Bend High.
No. 7 Caldera is making its first-ever playoff appearance and will host No. 10 North Eugene at 4:30 p.m.
No. 12 Summit will travel to Southern Oregon to take on No. 5 Crater. The Comets won the nonleague matchup in early September. Saturday’s match will be held at 4 p.m. No. 14 Mountain View will also be on the road when it takes on No. 3 Churchill at 4 p.m.
No. 3 Crook County, the champions of the Tri-Valley Conference, will host No. 14 Philomath at 1:30 p.m. with a chance to advance to the 4A state tournament at North Bend High in Coos Bay, Nov. 8-9.
In the first round of the 3A state playoffs, No. 17 Sisters went on the road and swept No. 16 Horizon Christian (25-18, 25-17, 25-15) Wednesday evening. The second-round match on Saturday at No. 1 Pleasant Hill is a rematch of last fall’s 3A state title match, which the Outlaws won. Sisters has reached the state tournament every season since 2013, and will try to beat its Mountain Valley Conference-foe for the first time this season to keep the streak alive.
This season, Trinity Lutheran, the champions of the East Cascades Conference, made the jump from 1A to 2A and is back in the postseason. The No. 5 Saints will host No. 12 Weston-McEwen at 4:30 p.m. with a chance to advance to the 2A state tournament at Ridgeview High, Nov. 8-9. Trinity Lutheran is looking to make the state tournament for the second straight season.
On Wednesday, No. 8 Central Christian defeated Fall City in the first round of the 1A state playoffs with a three-set sweep (25-21, 25-20, 25-15) and will host No. 9 North Clackamas Christian in the second round on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. The winner will advance to the 1A state tournament, also at Ridgeview Nov. 8-9.
