Over 20 memorials, dedications and highways honor veterans in Central Oregon. They vary from lists of Bend residents who died in wars since World War I to signs along honorary highways to statues of fallen soldiers. Any or all could be worth a visit Monday for Veterans Day.
Dick Tobiason, a retired Army lieutenant colonel, Vietnam War veteran and chairman of the Bend Heroes Foundation, who has dedicated his time to advocating for fellow veterans, knows where most of them are. He built one — the Bend Heroes Memorial in Brooks Park, where he has held an annual Memorial Day ceremony since 2006 — and placed or advocated for others.

This Veterans Day, Tobiason said volunteers will be placing 275 American flags around Bend Monday morning. Each flag was flown over the U.S. Capitol and bears a veteran’s name. The Redmond Downtown Flag Committee will also be placing over 1,000 flags around Redmond.
Originally called Armistice Day, Veterans Day marks the end of World War I when the Allied nations and Germany ceased fighting on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. It was first celebrated as Veterans Day in 1954. All U.S. armed forces are recognized.
Here’s where to honor local veterans on this Veterans Day. Locations and context provided by Tobiason.
