- Caldera’s Zadie Boyd (4) elevates to pass the ball through Silverton defenders during the 5A state quarterfinal match on Saturday at Caldera High School.
Four Central Oregon soccer teams will have a shot to qualify for state championship matches in Tuesday’s semifinal rounds.
The Bend High and Caldera girls teams, as well as the Summit and Crook County boys teams, survived the quarterfinal round on Saturday and are now one win away from playing for a state title on Nov. 16 in Hillsboro.
At least one Intermountain Conference team will play for the Class 5A girls championship. No. 3 Caldera, which beat No. 6 Silverton 3-0 on Saturday, will host No. 7 Bend High at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The Lava Bears pulled off a dramatic 2-1 upset in penalty kicks at No. 2 North Eugene.
The Wolfpack and the Lava Bears have played twice already this season. Caldera defeated Bend 1-0 on Oct. 2, and the teams tied 1-1 on Oct. 18.
This is the latest that two IMC girls soccer teams have squared off in the postseason since Summit and Bend met in the 2014 title match, which the Storm won 2-1 in overtime.
The chance of having a third IMC team in the semifinals proved not to be in the cards as No. 4 Summit, the IMC champions, fell 2-0 to No. 5 Wilsonville on Saturday.
“We had a super tough league this year, with four teams advancing to the playoffs,” said Caldera girls soccer coach Gavin Meyers. “All four of them were in the top 10 or 11. It was a hard league. I don’t think anybody won by more than one or two goals. It was a lot of fun, good battles, and good preparation for the postseason.”
With a 3-1 win over No. 9 Centennial, the No. 1 Summit boys soccer team is headed back to the 5A state semifinals, as the Storm will host No. 5 Woodburn at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Summit has reached the semifinals every year since 2018.
In the boys 4A state quarterfinals, No. 3 Crook County got by No. 6 Cottage Grove 3-2 to advance to the semifinals at No. 2 North Marion at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Legion Park in Woodburn.
No. 10 Madras had its season come to an end after falling 1-0 to North Marion.
