- Karina Rykman will perform Thursday night at Bend's Volcanic Theatre Pub.
I’m no dummy. I write about music in Bend, Oregon, which is full of people who love jam bands.
So here you go: Karina Rykman’s fine 2023 album “Joyride” was co-produced by Gabe Monro and a guy named Trey Anastasio, who also played guitar on several of its songs.
That’s Trey Anastasio, frontman of Phish, in case you were unsure.
Now that I have your attention, you need to know about Rykman, a singer, songwriter and virtuoso bassist from New York City who has played with Marco Benevento and opened for Khruangbin and the Tedeschi Trucks Band, among others.
To be clear, Rykman’s music isn’t all that jammy, but it is pretty irresistible. On “Joyride,” she showcases sleek, effervescent songs that sit somewhere near the nexus of bass-driven rock, psychedelic pop and lite-funk grooves. It’s a fusion that’s fun and highly danceable, if you’re into that sort of thing. Which if you’ve read this far, you probably are.
Karina Rykman, with Cloudchord: 8 p.m. Thursday, doors open 7:30 p.m., $17, Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Drive, volcanictheatre.com.
