Summit’s Boaz qualifies for Nike Cross Nationals with sixth place at regionals

- Summit runner Hayden Boaz (2987) finished sixth in the NXR Northwest Regional Championships on Nov. 16 in Eagle, Idaho.
EAGLE, Idaho — Summit runner Hayden Boaz placed sixth at the NXR Northwest Regional Championships on Saturday at Eagle Island State Park to qualify for the Nike Cross Nationals, Dec. 7 at Glendoveer Golf Course in Portland.
Boaz fell about 1 kilometer into the 5,000-meter boys championship race, but recovered to get back with the leaders to finish in a time of 14 minutes, 58 seconds.
Tayvon Kitchen of Crater won the race in 14:53. Kitchen won the Class 5A state championship in Eugene on Nov. 9 and Boaz finished second.
The NXR Northwest Regional Championships featured top runners from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Alaska and Hawaii.
Caldera’s Mason Morical, who finished third in the 5A state championship, placed 24th in 15:33.
The Summit boys finished 12th as a team. The boys race included 218 runners.
In the girls championship race at the NXR Northwest Regional Championships, Summit finished fourth as a team.
Sophia Capozzi (fifth at 5A state) led the Storm with a 29th-place finish in 18:25. Caldera’s Maddie Carney (third at 5A state) finished 31st in 18:26.
Class 6A state champion Chloe Huyler of Lakeridge won the race in 17:00. The girls race included 209 runners.
