Deschutes County will see 34 new electric vehicle charging ports near homes, workplaces and public parking lots with the help of a rebate from the Oregon Department of Transportation.

The agency’s Community Charging Rebates Program awarded $179,000 for new charging stations among nine projects in Deschutes County. The awards went to public utilities, businesses, hotels and property companies.

A total of $2.5 million was available in the program’s second round of funding, providing for 460 ports in 20 counties across Oregon.

The program sponsors “Level 2” charging ports, which carry outlets with twice the power of a standard electrical outlet, juicing vehicles with a faster charge and longer range.

About 70% of the funding was reserved for chargers in rural or disadvantaged communities, according to a news release.

Another $2.75 million in round three of the program is on the way.

The rebates range from $3,500 to $6,250 per charging port or up to three-quarters of eligible project costs, whichever is less.
