Project name: Trinity Lutheran Phase 1 Expansion

Address: 21865 Empire Ave., Bend

General contractor: SunWest Builders

Architect: SĀJ Architecture

Cost of the project: $18 million

Project details: Kyla Vevia, director of marketing and communications for Trinity Lutheran School, said in an email that the expansion marks the first phase of the school’s larger masterplan that includes future phases providing for classrooms, offices, kitchen, additional parking and athletic facilities. Athletic facilities will include a track and field, indoor practice spaces, tennis and pickleball courts and a gym.

This first phase will feature an enhanced performing arts center, worship and classroom space and commons area.

Trinity Lutheran School is a private Christian school with 550 students in pre-K through high school.

Trinity’s congregation has worshiped in its current gymnasium for nearly 20 years, Vevia said. The new building will have a dedicated space for worship with fixed seating. It will also have a modern classroom space that includes a new science lab in the high school. The commons will be used for collaborative learning, social event hosting and as a dedicated lunch area. When Phase 1 is completed, Trinity will also have an entrance from Empire Avenue in addition to the current Butler Market entrance.

The design of the building will feature strong roof forms and deep overhangs. Vevia said the building’s form and color palette drew inspiration from Central Oregon’s natural landscape.

Vevia said Trinity hopes to offer the new facility to the community as a venue option for gatherings, events and performances.

Funding for the project was secured through support from Trinity family members and its lending partner, The Lutheran Church Extension Fund.

“This future development will further expand and support the opportunities for Trinity families, excellence in educational programs, and further Trinity’s mission to share the hope of Jesus with Bend, Central Oregon and beyond,” Vevia wrote.

The current project schedule allows for occupancy by the end of October 2025. Construction began Sept. 8.
