Oregon State Parks is inviting Oregonians to get the new year off to a fun and active start with its First Day Hikes program. These guided hikes will take place at 30 state parks on New Year’s Day.
Guided hike locations in Central Oregon include Smith Rock State Park, where rangers will introduce hikers to the area’s unique geology, plants and wildlife.
The 1.5-mile round-trip hike will take visitors along the Crooked River. The hike includes a steep hike down into the canyon (and back up). Closed-toed shoes or boots with good soles are recommended. Part of the journey is accessible for wheelchair users. For more information call the park at 541-548-7501.
Parking fees are waived on the first day of the year. Pre-registration for the event is required through the state parks website. Meet the ranger at 9 a.m. at the Smith Rock State Park’s Welcome Center yurt.
