Oregon State survived a shaky second-half stretch, pulling away to beat Charleston 74-65 Sunday in the Diamond Head Classic quarterfinals in Honolulu.

The Beavers, leading by as many as 14 points, saw Charleston get as close as four points during the final minutes before responding with a solid finish.

Oregon State is 9-2, matching its best start since 1984-85 when the Beavers were 10-1. The Beavers have been 9-2 six times during the past 30 years.

The Beavers beat Charleston with a defense that held Charleston to 36% shooting. OSU ranks among the country’s top six in field goal and scoring defense.

Oregon State advances to the tournament semifinals, where it will face Oakland (4-7) at 5 p.m. (ESPNU). Oakland upset Loyola (Chicago) 72-71 in a Sunday quarterfinal.

Michael Rataj had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead Oregon State. Damarco Minor also scored 16 points. The Beavers had four players post double figures, as Parsa Fallah scored 14 points and Nate Kingz 10.

Lazar Djokovic and Derrin Boyd scored 13 points each for Charleston (8-3). Oregon State held Ante Brzovic, the Cougars leading scorer this season, to eight points.

Oregon State held the lead for all four minutes of the game. The Beavers led 35-26 at halftime, taking the lead for good on a layup by Fallah with 15:29 left in the first half. Fallah’s layup started a run of 10 consecutive points. The Beavers led by as many as 14 points during the first half.

The Beavers maintained a sizable cushion for the first 12 minutes of the second half, when it got interesting. Charleston, trailing 55-43, scored eight consecutive points to trim the deficit to four points with 5:59 remaining. But Oregon State regrouped. Rataj scored a couple baskets, then Josiah Lake II turned a steal into a layup to put the Beavers in front 66-56 with 1:39 left.

The Cougars got as close as five points during the final minute, but Minor and Lelevicius each hit free throws during the final 29 seconds to secure the win.
