La Pine’s Devon Kerr added yet another achievement to his stellar high school wrestling career this past weekend.
At the prestigious Sierra Nevada Classic in Reno, Nevada, Kerr, who is chasing a fourth Class 3A individual state championship this winter, won the 144-pound weight class, pinning all six of his opponents to claim the title.
Kerr won three of his first four matches with first-round pins to advance to the semifinals of the tournament. In the semifinals, he picked up a narrow 9-6 decision over Kadrick Lewallen, of Spanish Springs, Nev. Then, in the championship match, he took down Nathan Prichard, a state champion from Fernly, Nev., to win the title.
It marks the second consecutive year that a La Pine wrestler has won their weight class at the Sierra Nevada Classic, which includes nearly 100 wrestling teams from across the West.
Last year, La Pine’s Landyn Philpott was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding wrestler. This year, Philpott finished second in the 150-pound weight class.
