EUGENE — In desperate need of a response from an embarrassing performance against Illinois and a 13-point deficit in the first half, Jackson Shelstad picked Oregon off the mat.
Shelstad scored 20 of his 23 points after the Ducks got in the five-possession hole to lead five players in double-figures for the Ducks in a 83-79 win over Maryland Sunday afternoon at Matthew Knight Arena.
Down 30-17 midway through the first half, Oregon went on a 13-2 run, with Shelstad scoring its final eight. A 52.2% three-point shooter last season, Shelstad entered the day just 26.7% from behind the arc this season and made a career-best five threes on as many attempts.
“I got a couple of threes down and I kind of blacked out, got in the zone right there and started pulling it,” Shelstad said. “I believe in my work. I haven’t been shooting it as well as I’ve wanted to this season. I try to keep trusting my shot, putting int he work and today I got hot and trusted my shot. My teammates did a good job finding me. It was going in today; it was one of those days.”
Nate Bittle had 16 points and six rebounds, Keeshawn Barthelemy had 14 points, five assists and four rebounds and Jadrian Tracey and Kwame Evans Jr. (seven rebounds) each added 10 points for Oregon (13-2, 2-2 Big Ten).
Rodney Rice scored 19 points, Derik Queen had 17 points and five rebounds and Ja’Kobi Gillespie had 16 points for Maryland (11-4, 1-3), which led 45-42 at the half.
Thanks to a 14-2 run to open the second half and strong play from its top contributors down the stretch, Oregon responded to the most lopsided loss of Dana Altman’s tenure with another Quadrant 1 win, its fifth of the season.
“A long two days, that’s for sure,” Altman said. “Proud of the guys for bouncing back. We got down early and could have gave into it and thought they did a good job staying with it and finding a way to win the game.”
Oregon fell six spots to No. 15 in the latest AP Top 25 Poll, released on Monday.
