Bend High student Bradley Hughes died in a crash in Redmond Thursday afternoon. Bend-La Pine Schools had a counseling team at Bend High Friday morning available for students and staff, said Communications Director Scott Maben.
Hughes was driving a 2000 Subaru Legacy north on Canal Boulevard just before 5 p.m. Thursday when he crossed over the dividing line, according to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office. His car crashed head-on into a 2022 Toyota Tacoma driven by Samuel Palacios Arroyo, near the intersection of SW Canal Boulevard and SW Quarry Avenue.
Hughes, 16, had serious injuries and was transported to St. Charles Bend, where he later died. Arroyo was uninjured and his passenger, Victor Enriquez Perez, both from Salem, had minor injuries and was taken to St. Charles Redmond.
Hughes was not wearing his seatbelt while driving, wrote the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office in a press release. Alcohol, drugs and speed are not considered to have impacted the crash.
Bend High staff, students and families were informed of the death Friday, said Maben.
