- Bryan Gennaro, left, and Trent Bowman will compete in Friday’s game of SKATE. Both are involved in Board House Society, an effort to bring to life an indoor skatepark in Central Oregon, where cold, wet conditions can curtail skateboarding for months at a time.
On Friday evening, the folks behind the nonprofit Board House Society will host 16 of the best street skaters in Bend as they face off in head-to-head matches in a game of SKATE at Silver Moon Brewing’s Webfoot Garage. The winner will roll away with an impressive cash prize.
“Skaters are competing for fame, glory, the coveted BoHo Trophy and $1,000 cash prize generously donated by rock star local retailer, Vanilla Clothing Co.,” said Caitlin Bjornstad, cofounder of Board House.
What is SKATE? It’s basically HORSE with flat-ground skateboard tricks — kickflip and shove-it variations — instead of a basketball and a hoop. If someone does a switch nollie heelflip, say, and their opponent doesn’t, they earn themselves a letter.
Back Porch Coffee Roasters and Humm will provide non-alcoholic beverages, with some generous crowd giveaways from local contributors. After the skate action concludes, a dance party with DJ music will be held.
Suggested donation is $10, which will help toward Board House’s effort to bring to life a much-needed indoor skatepark in Bend, where the cold and wet conditions from fall through spring can sometimes shave months off a skater’s crucial on-board time.
Board House indoor skatepark effort keeps rolling
Doors open at 6 p.m. SKATE game starts at 6:30. Webfoot Garage is located at 24 NW Greenwood Ave., Bend.
