Never fear, democracy is alive and well — at least, when it comes to snowplow voting.

Nearly 16,000 people cast a ranked-choice ballot in the Portland Bureau of Transportation’s inaugural Snowplow Naming Contest. The winners were announced Monday.

The city’s newly named snowplows are:

  • The Big Leplowski, submitted by Bryson Helble
  • Beverly Clear-y, submitted by Elizabeth Mara
  • Brrrrnside, submitted by Sherri P.
  • Salt and Thaw, submitted by Arpita K.
  • And, of course, Plowy McPlowface, an anonymous submission.

The city transportation department received more than 3,000 unique snowplow names from some 4,000 submissions. The department narrowed it down to 20 mostly Portland-centric names for last month’s public vote.

Several of the winning names were submitted by multiple people, but PBOT is recognizing the first person to submit each name.

The names will be added to the snowplows later this year, PBOT announced.

The city of Portland has 56 snowplows. That seems like a lot, but the “snowplows” actually serve as regular maintenance trucks most of the year. During inclement winter weather, the city outfits the trucks with snowplows and sand/salt spreaders.

Those snow plows could hit the streets as soon as this week, as there’s a chance of snow in the forecast.
