Sandkrawler, Doombia bring heavy vibes to Silver Moon Brewing

Let’s start this brief by being very clear: The word “gimmick” isn’t inherently negative. According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of the word as it’s being used here is: “a trick or device used to attract business or attention.”

There are two bands playing Silver Moon Brewing Saturday night that attracted my attention with good gimmicks. One of them, Sandkrawler, is a heavy, “Star Wars”-themed stoner metal band from Portland. In less-skilled hands, the theme — “May the riff be with you,” reads their website — could come off as goofy. Fortunately, Sandkrawler rocks in a way that you can feel rippling through your chest. They rule.

Also on the bill: Doombia, a combo from Portland that combines doom metal and cumbia music into a satisfying whole. Cumbia, if you’re unfamiliar, is a style of folk music and dance that originated in Colombia, and this group takes that bit of Latin flair and mixes it with sludgy guitar riffs and psychedelic vocals. Doom plus cumbia equals Doombia!

Opening the show will be locals Vacancy Floor, whose only gimmick seems to be making the kind of music that sounds like it could split open the earth, scoop out its earth-brains, set them on fire and then play a show for the people who show up to warm their hands by the Earth-Brains Bonfire.

Sandkrawler, Doombia and Vacancy Floor: 7 p.m. Saturday, $12, Silver Moon Brewing, 24 NW Greenwood Ave., Bend, silvermoonbrewing.com.
