- "Annie the Musical" opens at the Tower Theater in Bend Friday.
After eight years, Thoroughly Modern Productions is bringing “Annie the Musical” back to the Tower Theater.
The show opens Friday and runs for two weekends.
There are two casts, with a combined number that rounds out to 80 people, said David DaCosta, director and founder of the production company. Marley Maidl and Abby James star as Annie.
The 1976 musical, based on the early 20th-century comic strip by Harold Gray, promises the hope of tomorrow with hits like “Tomorrow” and “It’s the Hard Knock Life.” The musical hit Broadway in 1977, after which it was nominated for 11 Tony awards and won seven, including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book.

In January, DaCosta put out a call for auditions for orphan Annie’s sidekick, Sandy, and found a star in Famwise, a dog rescued by his owner last fall.
“He’s the sweetest thing. He’s absolutely perfect, so we got lucky there,” DaCosta said, of Famwise. “The biggest challenge is everybody remembering that we have a job to do and so does that dog.”
Simeon Rose returns to the stage to play radio announcer Bert Healy after performing the role in 2017, along with several other returning cast members. Otherwise, the show will be completely different, with a reimagined set and approach, DaCosta said.
