Heading outside: Ski areas get 30 inches of snow

Published 3:30 pm Thursday, February 6, 2025

Monday’s snowfall in town — and not wanting to jump into the gym just yet — called for a casual evening trudge in the snow along the Deschutes River Trail.

Lacking winter running shoes or traction cleats, I typically run only in fresh snow. But writing this before I’m about to hop on a treadmill makes me want to invest in some cleats. Because Monday was fun. I jumped on the river trail at First Street Rapids Park heading north and spotted fresh ski tracks. Hoping to get a glimpse of the mysterious glider, I quickened my pace. Found plenty of walkers watching their dogs play in the snow but the tracks slowly disappeared. It was dusk by the time I made my way back into town. I passed two fatbikers — one with a child on its handlebars — riding up the berms along the trail. Five slow miles in the legs made for a peaceful Monday evening. I found some cleats for $30 on Amazon.

Local ski areas got over 2 feet of snow over the past week, according to forecasts. And a couple of more refreshes are expected before Saturday.

Forecasts show no more snow in town over the weekend and through next week. Temperatures are supposed to remain mostly below freezing. Highs in Bend will near the mid-30s Saturday and Sunday and drop into the teens overnight.

Below are some recommended spots for recreation this weekend. For mountain biking and other trail-specific updates, check out bendtrails.org and the BendTrails Facebook group.

Ski areas get 30 inches of snow, refills this weekend

Mt. Bachelor

As of Thursday morning, Mt. Bachelor ski area had received nearly 3 feet of snow over the past week, according to the mountain report. The mountain got 3 inches overnight Thursday, 7 inches in 24 hours and 9 inches in 48 hours.

According to the mid-mountain forecast, Bachelor was supposed to get 3 more inches throughout the day Thursday. Between Friday and Saturday, about 5 inches total is forecasted. Temperatures are predicted to remain in the teens all weekend, with a chance of dropping below 10 degrees Fahrenheit at night. Winds should top out at 10 mph.

Bachelor staff reminded skiers and snowboarders to beware of snow immersion and tree well risk on the mountain. Ski or ride with a partner and keep them in sight at all times. For more information on deep snow safety, visit deepsnowsafety.org.

Bachelor has tallied 278 inches of snow so far this season, the mountain report records. The mountain’s base depth was 117 inches Thursday.

Hoodoo Ski Area

Hoodoo Ski Area received 26 inches of snow over the past week. The mountain is forecasted to add another 6 inches between Thursday and Saturday through light, consistent snowfall, according to the mid-mountain forecast. Temperatures should remain around 20 degrees Fahrenheit on the mountain.

In addition to its Thrifty Thursday deal, Hoodoo has a $30 lift ticket deal for skier and snowboarders who wear onesies on Wednesday.

Hoodoo’s base depth was 85 inches Thursday, according to its conditions report. Its season total was 174 inches of snow.

Willamette Pass Resort

According to the snow report Thursday, Willamette Pass got 8 inches of snow overnight. And the past week brought 30 inches to the ski hill. The mid-mountain report predicts 4 inches of snow Thursday night and additional couple of inches Friday and Saturday to refresh the slopes for the weekend.

The mountain’s base depth was 61 inches Thursday morning. The resort had received a total of 152 inches of snow this season. All trails and four out of six lifts were open Thursday.

Fatbike options galore

When it snows in Central Oregon, all those great mountain bike trails turn into great fatbike trails. (I know, “Thanks, Capt. Obvious.”) Phil’s Trailhead is likely the most convenient for Bend residents. Only 4 miles from downtown Bend, the trail system is great for fatbikes during a wintry week like this. A popular route on snowy days is to take Ben’s Trail to MTB to Kent’s Trail. It’s about a 4-mile loop with under 400 feet of elevation gain — plenty to do on the beefier bikes.

If you’re willing to drive farther, Wanoga Snow Play Area Sno-Park has groomed fatbike trails during the winter. The two loops at Wanoga, 3 PSI and Outer Loop, makes for nearly 10 miles of fatbike riding. When you get the chance, thank the Central Oregon Trail Alliance folks for grooming and all the other trail building and maintenance work they do.

Fatbikers feeling fit and race-ready should jump into the 22nd Annual Great Nordeen fatbike race Sunday morning. The 15K race starts at the base of Rainbow Chair, just below Sunrise Lodge. Cross-country ski races will start at West Village Lodge.

Explore Paulina Lake area on snowmobile, skis

Looking to avoid the winter weekend traffic on Century Drive? Head down east of La Pine this weekend to Ten-mile Sno-park in the Paulina Lake area. At 5,560 feet, the sno-park has over 100 miles of snowmobiling trails as well as nordic trails for skiers and snowshoers. It also offers access to Paulina Creek Falls, the Newberry Caldera and its surrounding area, of which Paulina Peak is the highest point.

Be aware that the parking lot often fills up during the weekends in winter. A sno-park permit is also required until April 30.
