Volcanic Theatre hosts Eggy Saturday

I wrote a long introduction to this brief about Eggy’s name and how I love it because I love to eat eggs. But it felt a little too cheeky, and I worried that it would seem like I was disrespecting the band, which will play at Volcanic Theatre Pub Saturday night.

Eggy is a four-piece from Connecticut who seem like they might be a jam band. They play jam-friendly festivals and club shows with jam bands and they call their year-end tour a “New Year’s run.” They also have posted scores of their own live recordings to Bandcamp. Which is cool! And very jam-band-y.

And sometimes, Eggy sounds very much like a jam band, like on “Smile,” the third song from their latest full-length “Waiting Game,” which came out last year. But just as often throughout the album, they don’t really sound like a jam band at all. At different times, Eggy sounds like a retro synth-pop band or a lithe funk ‘n’ soul band or a snappy, strummy rock band. They sound more like Hall & Oates or The 1975 or Jars of Clay than, say, Phish.

By all accounts, though, Eggy’s live show still leaves plenty of room for long-form jamming and improvisation, which makes sense, because that’s what’s made them a fast-rising band within that scene. See for yourself what the hype is all about this weekend in Bend.

Eggy, with Spunj: 8 p.m. Saturday, doors open 7:30 p.m., $21, Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century Drive, Bend, volcanictheatre.com.
