Exploring with your Valentine

I am not a major fan of the commercialism of Valentine’s Day, but I do like the idea of spending time together with my sweetheart and letting them know that they are special to me. With Valentine’s Day starting a holiday weekend this year, I recommend some outdoor adventures that are better with a loved one. Any of these activities can still end with eating chocolates if that’s your prerogative.

Nordic skiing at Skyline Sports Complex

Thanks to our recent winter weather and efforts by XC Oregon community volunteers, grooming is strong for both skate skiing and classic skiing at Skyline Sports Complex. This seasonal amenity is only possible when we have enough snow and that makes it even more special with a date or partner!

This is a wonderful opportunity for Nordic skiing in town and the lighting allows for evening skiing too. Lights turn off at 8:30 p.m. and the park closes at 10 p.m., so it could even be an after-dinner activity.

All funding for the grooming equipment, gas and maintenance is 100% paid for by the XC Oregon 501c3 non-profit organization with permission from Bend Park and Recreation District.

To help maintain the grooming, please do not walk on the trail, and keep dogs away from the tracks. Also, step off trail when taking a break and announce when passing as courtesy. Ski under control and be respectful of others.

Snowshoeing at Riley Ranch Nature Reserve

If you want a day-time activity with your darling, consider snowshoeing or hiking at Riley Ranch Nature Reserve. I always love the peacefulness of the 184-acre community park, but it really shines brightest in the winter. It’s even quieter when it is snow covered and creates an unrivaled sense of calm and tranquility.

Riley Ranch has several loop options to explore. The Juniper Loop and the Sage Flats Loop in the upper portion of the reserve are easy walking loops that feature a viewing deck that offers stunning views of the river and canyon below, as well as the skyline and mountains. These trails combined to be about 1.5 miles.

Robin’s Run Trail is a steep switchback trail that connects the Sage Flat Loop Trail to the lower Canyon Loop Trail, which weaves through the forests of the river canyon and has river access points for selfies or nature photos. The lower Canyon Loop is 1.25 miles. Please tread carefully and avoid if conditions are icy.

The Riley Ranch Trail is a 1.3-mile trail (2.6 miles out and back) that connects the Lower Canyon Loop Trail to Tumalo State Park.

Be aware that during heavy snows, Riley Ranch parking lots may not be a priority to clear, so patience is appreciated. It also closes at dusk and isn’t available for evening recreation.

Open Skate Disco at The Pavilion

If you and your Valentine are up for some ice-skating fun, The Pavilion has a disco-themed open skate session from 5:45 to 7:30 p.m. on Valentine’s Day.

Taking a cue from the feel-good times during the summer roller skating season, this ice skating version allows attendees to feel the rhythm, catch some lights from the glimmering disco ball, and skate to fun tunes every Friday evening through April 4 (but not March 21 due to a scheduled hockey event.) Admission is $13 for adults with skate rentals ($9 without skate rentals).

If you prefer to cozy up by the fire pit and be a spectator, The Pavilion has curling league on Saturday and Sunday evenings, and you can watch adult hockey league on Monday evening. Those are free for spectators and are a best kept secret for date night outings in Bend.

Whether you’re seeking adventure, fun or just time together, consider how these close-to-home winter activities can add to the holiday weekend.
