Editorial: The penny may not be saved but earned its end

Pity the penny. The sense is that it may make no more sense for the cent.

A government analysis has said since 2006 the cost of making a penny and even the cost of a nickel exceeded their cost of manufacture.

President Donald Trump wants to stop minting pennies.

“For far too long the United States has minted pennies which literally cost us more than 2 cents,” he wrote on Truth Social. “Let’s rip the waste out of our great nation’s budget, even if it’s a penny at a time.”

Is this an issue where Americans can come together with Trump and dispense with the cent?

We aren’t going to feel much of a loss if the penny is tossed. We do imagine it means many things will be rounded up to the nearest nickel, which is a kind of inflation we aren’t thrilled about.

Many people have already gone cashless. Should we aim to get rid of even more cash?

The $100 bill is often used by criminal enterprises for drug deals, smuggling cash and much more. It helps criminals do their crimes and escape some of the problems of leaving electronic tracks. Getting rid of all physical currency could make a life of crime more complicated, though criminals would adjust.

Penny for your thoughts.
